The Violence of Smooth Spaces

One way to view culture, and one that I subscribe to and believe to be put forth by Deleuze and Guattri, is as the amalgamation of a series of responses to a series of problems. It is a localized and historical process; problems arise and responses are engendered. These responses inform future responses, they inform the way future problems will be framed. Culture stratifies over time, solidifying points of departure which, in turn, influence destinations. It is a system that acts upon itself and is acted upon from the outside in the form of problems.

As a consequence of this view, the positing of problems becomes a source of power. What constitutes a problem and what problems warrant a response become crucial questions as they have a large effect on the emergent culture and, reciprocally, the emergent culture has a hand in determining what will count as a problem warranting a response.

Website
