Chile Week 1: Setbacks, Skiing, and Sopaipillas

Prior to 8 PM on my first day of travel, everything had gone swimmingly; my first two flights were easy and quick, my arrival in Mexico was a shock to my brain but my broken Spanish got me to where I needed to be, I had plenty of food/comfy clothes, and I even did my skincare routine in the airport bathroom prior to the flight. But as my 4-hour layover turned into 6, and then 8, and then an undetermined amount of time, “swimmingly” drifted further and further away as the word I would have used to describe my day. What’s hilarious is that I actually boarded the plane I was supposed to take — a massive, beautiful aircraft that was finally filled up with people by 1 AM (which is roughly the time we would have been halfway to our final destination) — and had closed my tired eyes, only to be rudely awakened 15 minutes later by the news that the flight was canceled and we were to deboard, take all our luggage, and head to baggage claim with no promise of lodging or even a new flight.

Website
