Wonderspaces: A different Participant Experience (PX)

Most people know that that capital of Texas’s unofficial motto is “Keep Austin Weird.” The city is known for its eclectic art, music, and food scene. One space that aligns with Austin’s vibe is a 28,000 square foot immersive art exhibit that features installations from artists around the world. These diverse exhibits have been displayed at famous festivals such as Sundance, Burning Man, and SXSW, and new art rotates in continually. Although each art installation is uniquely different, they have one thing in common: Their art transcends boundaries and sparks imagination without limits.

Wonderspaces is unique because the audience is valued and considered as much as the art itself. Athena Demos, founder of Big Rock Creative, rightly pointed out that there are no users in immersive spaces, only participants (Diggines, 2022). Therefore, designers need to shift their mindset beyond User Experience (UX) toward Participant Experience (PX) (Chehimi, 2021). Each Wonderspaces exhibit crafts a slightly different Participant Experience (PX), ranging from a visitor or spectator to a creator.

Website
