Lessons on Masculinity from Iconic Male Characters of Classic Literature

Looking at the world of today, I perceive a fragile state of masculinity. Men don’t understand how to be in modern times. Masculinity is being questioned, criticized and — according to many subgroups of “men’s rights” — outright threatened. While men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women, many of them flock to subreddits and internet forums to blame women for their loneliness, as well as unite their suffering and shame that they cannot express outside the digital realm. Likewise, many of these lonely, angry men are preyed upon by so-called “pickup artists” and “alpha male gurus” that not only further dig their victims into bigger holes of despair with their superficial and vacuous advice on how to “get women”, but also profit massively from those festering insecurities.

“Only 21% of men say they received emotional support from a friend within the past week, compared to 41% of women, according to a 2021 survey by the Survey Center on American Life. Similarly, just 25% of men say they’ve said “I love you” to a friend recently, as opposed to 49% of women.” — USA Today

I am a woman, so I can’t pretend to speak for the male experience in a capitalist and patriarchal 21st century. I can only use my observations to make my point. What I have observed is this: the patriarchy has deprived women of many economic and financial opportunities, as well as positions of power, since they have historically been and still are the obvious victims of this system. But it has also deprived men of many social and emotional opportunities; to remain the patriarch, they must forfeit all rights to emotion and vulnerability, often leading to a lack of meaningful connections with the people around them.
