Murdered For a Few Shillings: A Case From 1934

On Saturday 17th February 1934, Robert Pennefather let himself into 47 Handcroft Road, Croydon, at 8.35 in the evening. This was where he lodged at the home of Mrs Eliza Ray. He had been in Croydon town centre visiting his friend Mr Schulman.

He noticed that the rugs in the hall were not where they should be and that the door to the back room was bolted, whereas it was usually left open.

Wondering why this was, he slid the bolt back to see if there was any particular reason for this departure from normal practice. What he saw in the room shocked him intensely.
