Bringing Flavors of Russia to the US

I was born in Los Angeles, but at a very young age, in the early 2000s, my family had to move to St. Petersburg, Russia. I spent nine years living in Russia before moving back to the US. As foreign tourists would say, there were three reasons to visit the USSR: Watching ballet, going to the circus, and tasting the ice cream. Every summer we would go to Russia, hanging out at the “dacha” and visiting our families there. My earliest ice cream memories are associated with the summer, “dacha” by the lake and some other village kids, with whom we would ride our bikes to the store to get some ice cream. There was an ice cream named “Vanya”. It’s a condensed milk ice cream in a cup and it was very primitive, with a little wooden stick as a spoon. And it was the best ice cream ever. I don’t know if they make it anymore… I ended up going to school in Russia, finishing high school there, and, after that, moving back to America .
