A French in America

One could not talk about French clichés about Americans without mentioning what I call The Five Graces, to borrow from the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova and his famous sculpture The Three Graces. The sculpture depicts the three daughters of Zeus, according to Greek mythology, the goddesses of beauty, elegance and joy; Euphrosyne (mirth), Aglaia (elegance) and Thalia (youth and beauty).

My Graces are not three but five and a testament, according to French perception, to the superficiality, the insincerity, and the lack of depth in Americans. The Five Graces are adjectives that come up in almost every conversation with an American. They are: Great, Amazing, Awesome, Fabulous and Fantastic, though one could think of more to add to the list.
