Why Some White People Feel Triggered by Black History Month
<p>When a topic triggers someone, they may react defensively, and it's my suspicion that this is why some White people respond poorly to Black History Month. Since 1969, Americans have celebrated Black History Month in February. However, for some White people, focusing on the contributions and experiences of Black Americans is like hearing someone scratch long nails on a chalkboard. Their reaction reminds me of the saying, "When you're <a href="https://medium.com/counterarts/the-equality-feels-like-oppression-fallacy-45d48a8a096b" rel="noopener">accustomed to privilege</a>, equality feels like oppression." It's a sad state of affairs, but some White people don't want to share the spotlight with Black people, not even for the shortest month of the year.</p>
