Do Emotional Support Animals Really Support Mental Health?

I moved to San Francisco in 1990, the same year that President George Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). At the time, seeing a non-human mammal in a restaurant or street car was an anomaly. In the three decades since then, our urban landscapes have changed dramatically. We now commonly see dogs at the airport, cats in the workspace, and cockatoos at the coffee shop.

But confusion persists about service animals.

What rules regulate the roles of service animals in our society? Are emotional support animals service animals? Do these animals really help, or is this just another woke fad? Should society be restricting or further limiting this practice?
