So everyone is a COVID expert now huh? Right. Where is the epistemic humility?

Just type ‘Covid’ in the search bar and see what shows up for this year, in particular August and September.

There are several writers commenting on the return of the pandemic. These include artists, actors, models, writers and self-identified cat-ladies.

Their claim is of course about the dangers of Covid that hadn’t really gone away, and that we therefore need to consider the same restrictions we did since 2020: masking, distancing, etc.

Some of these claims are made at the expense of a ridiculed someone rather than critically evaluated data; in one piece, it’s the mother of the author who is a lost QANON conspiracy theorist, in another article it’s ‘stupid Trump supporters’. Yes, very rigorous and intelligent. And brave — not predictable at all.

Many of these articles are just the opinions of people who are in no position to give advice about a pandemic or disease preventative strategies. Not only are they not qualified medical practioners, but even if they were, they’d need to be epidemiologists and those well versed in public health and demographics to begin to comment on this issue.

Even then, peer-reviewed publications demonstrating your body of work and longevity in your field is what’s going to position you in a legitimate position to lecture the masses about a pandemic and disease control mechanisms. Even then, there won’t be consensus because some epidemiologists will differ in what they think preventative measures should be, based on their professional practice. So you will have to battle it out and come up with a sensible approach that takes all considerations into account.
