What are kettles used for in prison?

Kettles are a thing of the past. Or at least, that’s what I would have told you if you’d asked me six months ago. With a background in consulting, I thought people didn’t have time to wait for kettles to boil when instant boiling water taps are available. Anything that gave you time back was always a good thing.

Now I work in a prison and a lot of my thinking has changed, including my perception of kettles. What are kettles used for in prisons?

The sound of the kettle boiling, for many of you, will conjure up images of tea-making; this is also true in prison. However, the opportunity of breakfast or a morning cuppa is more a luxury than the norm. Without an alarm, officers open your cell, say ‘Freeflow!’ and give you 60 seconds to get up, dressed and leave your cell. Thank the lord for people like John on the fours in G wing; collecting up the blue plastic mugs and bring a round of coffee to get everyone’s heads straight before construction skills.
