Rent increases exacerbate Barcelona’s housing crisis.

Despite having an excellent career and residing in Barcelona for 21 years, Luis Jard was never able to afford to move up the housing ladder. When he first moved to the city, his rent made up 20% of his take-home pay; however, if he had just renewed his lease, the payments would have consumed approximately 40% of his income.

"This would have made it difficult to live comfortably in Barcelona and the company I work for allowed me to telecommute after Covid so I decided to leave," explains Jard, a 55-year-old corporate search consultant who has moved back to his hometown, which is located south of Tarragona. I miss Barcelona a lot because all of my friends still live there and there are fewer things to do in my small town today.

Website
