Why You Should Care About What’s Happening in the Supreme Court
<p>When I was a newly hatched lawyer, I handled a small trial in rural New Mexico. A woman slipped and fell in her cowboy boots, hurt her knee and sued the local grocery store. It was the kind of small dollar case that baby lawyers cut their teeth on.</p>
<p>My opponents were a couple of local boys whom the judge called by their first names. “Pete, James, you guys ready to go?” the judge looked up and smiled. He looked back down at his papers, turned slightly in my direction and said, “Defendants?”</p>
