City of God opening scene analysis

The opening scene of City of God (2002) sets the mood for what is to come throughout the rest of the film. The film starts out with the sharpening of a knife with sharp cuts to black after each act of running the blade over the rock, with the sharp, short, piercing noise of the blade being sharpened, with the underlying drum beat beneath.
