Don’t Believe the Right: The Free Speech Card Isn’t Likely to Save Trump

Ever since Special Counsel Jack Smith brought forth the recent indictments against Donald Trump, the eyes of the nation have been glued to their favorite news sources. Our former president may actually be about to face justice for his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. We’ve seen some members of the January 6 insurrection jailed for crimes against their country but this dark chapter won’t be closed until their leader, the president who used his power to stage a violent coup against democracy, is finally held accountable for his crimes.

Of course, the far right is still firmly behind Trump, even as the evidence against him continues to pile up. These people are sticking to the narrative that their leader is the victim of a “witch hunt”, claiming that he is falling prey to political persecution at the hands of the corrupt Democratic establishment.

It’s true that he’s received a bump in the polls since the indictments came out but legal scholars have made the argument that he should be barred from seeking reelection. If justice prevails, his new popularity may not end up mattering.
