How did the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia resist in the face of the Islamic advance in the region?

Ethiopia became one of the first Christian states in the world.

The conversion of the kingdom is attributed to Frumentius a Syrian in the service of the emperor of Axum who won his trust, becoming his advisor and the first bishop of Ethiopia. Thus he succeeded in converting the Axumite court and from there began the conversion of the people.
Following the conversion of the kingdom, it became an important ally of the Eastern Roman Empire in the region against the Sassanids and pagan Arabs and the numerous Jews in Yemen.

The conversion of the Arabian peninsula to Islam (the Ethiopians lost an important battle for the dominance of south-western Arabia) and the Muslim conquest of Egypt, isolated Ethiopia from its Christian ally.
