The main issue is that nuclear waste cannot be simply reprocessed, as it requires more energy than was released to form these wastes, making nuclear power pointless. Currently, there are technologies for re-enriching spent nuclear fuel, but sooner or later, we end up with waste that can no longer be used, amounting to several thousand tons per year.
