Exploiting Nuclear Energy for Space Travel using RTGs

Humanity’s pursuit of space exploration demands powerful and reliable energy sources capable of operating in the extreme conditions outside of our planet. This article examines the application of nuclear energy in the form of Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) for space missions.

The mechanism and design of RTGs will be discussed, illustrating how they harness the steady decay of isotopes like Plutonium-238 to generate electrical power for spacecrafts.

Historical and current applications of RTGs in space missions, including popular examples such as the Voyager probes and Mars rovers, will be analyzed to demonstrate their operational success and reliability. The advantages of RTGs, particularly in terms of their longevity and energy density, will be contrasted with the limitations of alternative power sources in space.
