A Weirdly Specific Lego Star Wars PC Bug

The other day, I wrote a very positive piece about Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. As part of the production process, I re-installed and fired up the three copies of that game I own, just to make sure it was still in a working and acceptable state, tech wise. I mentioned the PS5 and Switch releases in the article but didn’t really talk about the Steam release.

That’s because it has a super weird and game breaking bug in it, which only affects users with touchscreens on their Windows devices. I know that’s not a huge swathe of people, but if you’ve had framerate problems in the PC release of the game and you happen to be in this niche like me, then I’ve got some “answers” for you.

I’ve been doing a lot of gaming on the ROG Ally, the new handheld that’s just as fiddly as a regular gaming laptop but uses minimal power and doesn’t turn my room into a furnace like my desktop PC. I installed Lego Star Wars on the Ally last weekend, but immediately ran into nightmarish and obvious framerate problems. The game struggled to play back its own intro logo screens, let alone run the menus or the game itself. Baffled, I tried tweaking a few settings and checking for fresh video drivers, but I was stumped. The ROG Ally should be more than powerful enough to run the Steam version of the game, and it’s very well optimized on consoles.

I dug around the internet for a while, and sure enough, it seems that the Steam build of Skywalker Saga has a bug where it stutters uncontrollably — but only if you have a touchscreen on your laptop or device. Huge thanks to this YouTube video for being the first source I tracked down. Digging further, it seems that this may also impact Lego DC Supervillains on Steam, which came out a bit before this new Star Wars game.
