Because I dwell in historical spaces, I am shocked by little that I see when researching, but this photo struck a nerve. Seeing this photo of young boys and later learning they were subjected to malnutrition, starvation, and being worked until they dropped forced me to change my original topic. I thought of my grandchildren at that age and imagined what would have happened if they (or I) had been born into another time.
