The Yee sang or Yu Sheng in Mandarin, is a raw fish (Yu being fish) salad as pictured above and makes its appearance for a month around Chinese New Year. Today the dish has been adapted to so many different versions to make it more exciting, premium, exotic, cute… it’s a testament of creativity at its best. As for its origins, I can proudly claim this is truly Malaysian — birthed, created, designed, invented (and whatever synonym you can think of) in Malaysia. Finally, something we don’t have to fight with other countries for ownership (I kid, I don’t fight about these things because they always end up in the same place, regardless of origin, my stomach. I appreciate good food.)
