What makes international marathons worthwhile is the opportunity to meet runners from vast backgrounds. Some become lifelong friends. Heck, if you’re able to connect with others who pay money to punish themselves on Sundays for hours — then there is something to be said about that friendship. On a recent trip to Lisbon, I ran into a fellow runner from Birmingham (see what I did there). Just like myself, she was there for the marathon and to find the hype about Lisbon. Not to mention, this was her first marathon and she was super excited about the opportunity to brave 42 km in Lisbon.
