<p>This Monday was not only miserable by simple virtue of being a Monday, but also because I ended up paying 50 pence more for a jar of capers.</p> <p>Sunday night had brought a bout of cooking. Not to be disheartened, I packed away my concoction and resolved to fix the ingredient gap the next morning.</p> <p>Entering the grocery store, I was a woman on a mission. My destination was clear, my objective fixed. &pound;1.95 for a jar of capers &mdash; expensive but acceptable. I marched confidently to the till, only to be horrified as the screen flashed &pound;2.45. Had I misread the label? Should I pretend to look for my loyalty card, all while scouring the store&rsquo;s website for the price? I cast hopeful glances, yearning for someone to notice my dilemma.
