What is “Courage”?

I want to start my thoughts about courage by quoting the 32nd President of the United States of America, Franklin D. Roosevelt: “Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear”. According to Buddhism, courage cannot be taken or received from external sources or a superior power; instead, courage is an intrinsic condition of humans, and our challenge is to quarry it.

These perspectives about courage bring memories of my participation in the Berlin Marathon on September 24th, 2017, when a few days before, I faced an obstacle that jeopardized my participation in the event. A week before the marathon, I traveled to Frankfurt to attend a business meeting. I made arrangements to spend some time getting acclimated and accustomed to the time difference, as well as to get rid of the jet lag. On September 20th, after finishing my business meetings, my wife and I headed to the Frankfurt Main Station to take the “Deutsche Bahn” to Berlin.
