Learning from “The Covenant and Our Way of Life”

Compared to previous General Synods, there is one theme that is largely absent from the motions proposed for this upcoming one: indigenous Christianity.

For many decades, indigenous Anglicans have been on a journey towards self-determination within the Anglican Church of Canada. At the last General Synod in 2019, various canonical changes made it possible for the Sacred Circle and the Anglican Council of Indigenous People to move forward in a largely self-determining fashion. So the relative absence of indigenous-related motions at this upcoming synod should not be a surprise. It is a natural fruit of steps towards self-determination.
