Why Didn’t the Romans Use War Elephants?

In a battle against the same Pyrrhus the following year, the Romans deployed specially prepared units with hooks and torches against the elephants. However, this tactic proved ineffective; at Asculum, the Greeks, with the help of their war elephants, once again routed the Roman troops. The Romans captured over a hundred Carthaginian war elephants during the First Punic War. Ancient Roman historian Frontinus wrote that, due to the lack of suitable ships, they had to be transported from Sicily to Italy on makeshift rafts. These elephants became the highlight of the triumphal procession of the victor — Lucius Caecilius Metellus. However, all of them were later killed in gladiatorial combat in the arena. The Romans lacked mahouts and trainers for war elephants, so this ancient Wunderwaffe proved useless to them.
