Viva la Mexico

Owning a Mexican restaurant doesn’t make me Mexican. Trips to Cancun, Acapulco, and Puerto Vallarta didn’t either. But visiting Mexico City for the first time makes me understand the civic pride my Mexican friends have for their capitol and homeland.

After my summer sojourn in Europe, I am quite familiar with the architecture and ambiance of the major cities, and Mexico City fits right in with the aesthetic of places like Lisbon, Zagreb, and Barcelona. It starts with the wide expanse of the main square in the city centre called the Zocalo, where you will find daily protests outside the main government buildings. The relentless banging of drums and loud screams over the megaphones can get quite annoying especially when your room overlooks the plaza, but at least it’s comforting to know that these protestors are fighting for women’s rights in a country that often sees the unaccounted murders of thousands of women each year.

Visit Now
