In Mexico, There Are No Indians
<p>Julieta Barrionuevo, an Argentine tango instructor living in Mexico City, found out the hard way the limits of behaving poorly.</p>
<p>After her public tirade against city workers that were cutting down a tree on the street where she lived went viral, it was clear that she grossly misunderstood Mexican sensibilities.<a href="https://medium.com/@nevaer1/in-mexico-there-are-no-indians-2cbd8e05c73e#_ftn1" rel="noopener ugc nofollow">[1]</a> Barrionuevo dared to utter the one word that, in Mexico, cannot be spoken: “Indian.” She is heard yelling, “<em>Horrible india</em>” at a bystander filming the spectacle: “Horrible Indian.”</p>
<p><em>Indio</em> in Mexico is what <em>nigger</em> is in the United States: an inexcusable slur.</p>
