From Time-Trader to Value-Creator: How to Build a Resilient Skillset That AI Can’t Replace

AI Comes for Your Job

We can “safely” expect the job market to be massively disrupted by rapidly evolving AI capabilities. What only a year ago looked like a low-criticality concern, we see clearly the ability of Generative AI powered by advanced LLMs to execute with ease specialized intellectual work across all industries.

Despite initial predictions, jobs requiring complex manual labor seem to be protected against the first “wave”. In turn, intellectual labor requiring the execution of highly specialized work is prone to disruption.

If the discrete steps that make up an activity (independent of its complexity) can be reproduced (and improved) by an intelligent algorithm, you are out of luck. Businesses are already arriving at this straightforward conclusion:

AI can fulfill high value tasks more efficiently and much cheaper than human workers.

And this is just the beginning. The rate at which AI can improve itself is exponential. Without a strategic shift, we’re essentially fighting a losing battle.

When asking friends and colleagues about their concerns, I typically get a response along these lines:

“I don’t know what you’re taking about.. I don’t believe I will be impacted. I’m confident about my expertise.” — the blissful ignorance approach.

“I cannot think about anything else these days.. this will be awful! How will we survive?!” — the fatalistic approach.

“I cannot be more excited! Can you imagine all the possibilities and how the entire world can benefit?” — the naive-optimistic approach.
