Banish Zero-Sum Thinking and Embrace the Value of Diversity

<p>It was supposed to be a routine faculty meeting. Our task was to review the guidelines for our reaccreditation process to the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and draft responses to each of the criteria.</p> <p>In one section, we had to describe our &ldquo;special populations&rdquo; &mdash; those who were statistically underserved. The drafter listed the percentages of the racial compositions of our faculty, students, and community members who were affiliated with the school. It read something like this: of 25 faculty members, 4% were Black (that was just me); 8% were of Hispanic descent, and 8% were of Asian descent.
