The Fremen from Dune are Stoics

With the new Dune movie, which was a masterpiece of imagery and story — and of course, great characters — I also started to read the book by Frank Herbert. And I have to say, that there are many more nuances in the books, especially when it comes to the Fremen and their culture.

That’s why, in this article, I will shortly analyze the Fremen culture and way of being — which is very close to the Stoic philosophy — while at the same time, I will try to minimize the number of spoilers I give! Let’s get into it!

Who are the Fremen and their planet?

The Fremen are the native inhabitants of the planet Dune, also called Arrakis. This planet is a planet full of deserts, on which water is more precious than gold for its inhabitants.

However, here is the only place where the most precious substance in the known universe is found — the Spice.

This spice gives people enhanced abilities and is the sole way in which The Guild (also called the Spacer Guild — who owns a monopoly on space travel) is able to use interstellar travel. Without it, the Empire would end.

That’s why Dune is some important as a planet. It’s basically the heart of the Empire. If it stopped beating, the Empire would die.

The Fremen, however, have survived the harsh conditions of this planet (maybe the harshest in the whole known universe), due to their culture and way of thinking. And due to the Stoic thinking they hold in their culture!

Visit Now
