<p>Investigators have rules. These rules include corporate ethics, local laws and regulations. Regulations and laws help. They level the playing field for all companies and tend to make our lives more safe and productive. The best regulations are those that prescribe desirable outcomes over prescriptions of technology. I always say when speaking and advising companies and regulators I recommend they mandate behaviours and actions. Let the industry sort out technologies and how to achieve compliance. As soon as you prescribe a technology into law, the counterfeiters have won. Industry, playing by the rules, has to comply with use of the technology. The counterfeiters can, as they’ve proven many times, overcome the hurdle of the technology making it ineffective, obsolete and even dangerous. Laws are slow to change. Criminals are not. Companies are then stuck with compliance using an obsolete and dangerous technology. When it comes to rules and regulations it’s good to be technology agnostic</p>
