Musings of a Secret Squirrel — Pay Attention when someone you know Complains about their Medication

Some of you outside of the healthcare industry may not understand this. As a former employee of a large pharmaceutical company we all received mandatory training on reporting adverse events (in the US, not sure about Rest of World). The training is specific. When a family member, friend or even perfect stranger starts to recount having an adverse event related to taking a medication, even if it’s not from your company, you are obliged to document and report it.

Of course most of us would perhaps raise our hand and ask the person to stop, “I don’t want to hear about your adverse event because of the paperwork involved.” This is exactly the wrong decision. I would implore you to inquire further and document their experience. Get online in your employers system and report it so the appropriate people can take action.
