Is YOUR FACE an Insult OR Your Secret Superpower in Chinese?

In Chinese, 臉 (Liǎn) means “face,” and it can refer to your literal face on the front of your head.

But it can ALSO metaphorically refer to your reputation.

Your self-respect.

Your social standing.

So if someone ever accuses you of being 不要臉 “Bùyào liǎn,” (don’t + want + face) they’re not really saying that you don’t want your face anymore.
