Gut: Our Second Brain

Believe it or not! Just like how cows have four stomachs (ruminants), octopuses have 3 hearts; humans have two brains. The brain is a complex organ that controls thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, hunger and every process that regulates our body. When referring to the term ‘our brain’, we generally refer to the mushy organ inside our skull. However, there is another organ or rather a set of organs, that behaves very much like our brain. I’m referring to this inconspicuous part of our bodies which is the small intestine and large intestine. The little brain in our intestines, in connection with the big one in our skull, has been shown to partly determine our mental state and plays an interesting role in our well-being as well as in certain diseases throughout the body.

Learn More
