<p>This is the typical jest to someone who is dark-skinned and has hair highlights that resemble the natural hair color of Badjao. Of course, this is such a withering put-down for the person on the receiving end but this is an even more derogatory remark for the members of the aforementioned tribe.</p>
<p>Throughout history, the Filipino Sama or Badjao (also spelled as Bajau) have faced events of disenfranchisement, particularly in differential treatment, cultural integrity, environmental rights, and struggles in education. All of these things pose a major threat to their existence and identity. For this essay, I will be discussing how people use the name of Badjao as a term for ridicule — as if that’s a wisecrack to laugh about.</p>
