From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free
<p>As an English speaker, you might be wondering why the phrase is worded directionally, from right to left. Shouldn’t it be from left to right? I think the river comes first in the phrase because, in Arabic, the written language is read from right to left. I have a theory on linguistics, it might be wrong, but here it is: how languages are written may define how we think. Being that we English speakers read and write from left to right, we are more likely to define things from left to right. We are more likely to mentally map things out from left to right. If my theory is accurate, then that means Arabic readers are more likely to think and map out things from right to left. If my theory is accurate, this also applies to Aramaic, Hebrew, Kurdish, Farsi, Urdu, and the <a href="https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/which-languages-are-written-from-right-to-left.html" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">six other languages</a> that read and write from right to left. So technically, if I’m correct, the phrase is born out of English words using an Arabic syntax.</p>
