Investing for retirement: 401(k)s

Investing should be democratic, inexpensive, and easily accessible. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. I saw this first-hand with my parents, who immigrated to the US from India in 1995. They hired costly financial advisors, and this regularly ate into the returns of the money they were able to invest (which was meager — America is tough on immigrants). After I graduated college, I started managing their investments — this included their retirement portfolio, cutting out many of the fees that they were unnecessarily paying.

And with that, I’m putting together this little guide to help others — whether they’re managing the portfolios of their close-to-retired immigrant parents or wanting to invest their own money.
