Project Feline: Conversation about Conservation

Inthe last century, we lost about 97% of the global tiger population. These numbers are also true for other species of big cats. Being a top predator, tigers keep the population of other species checked and balance the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Therefore, Wildlife Conservation is crucial to maintaining ecological balance. Loss of biodiversity, shifting of different species to the endangered list, and slow towards extinction affect the health of the ecosystem surrounding it.

Humans are complex beings, having jumped quickly up the food chain, their actions impact the entire ecosystem. Big cats, especially tigers, have been declining owing to human activities such as hunting, poaching, and claiming wildlife areas for agricultural and commercial purposes. It’s estimated that in 1900 around 100,000 tigers lived in India, but by 1972, only 1827 were left in the country.
