World3: The M.I.T. program that predicted the end of the world !

In 1965, Italian industrialist Aurelio Peccei (1908–1984) gave a lecture about the radical scientific and technological changes happening around the world. Alexander King (1909–2007), the Scottish scientist head of Scientific Affairs at The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was impressed with Peccei’s message and arranged to meet him.

In April 1968, Peccei and King assembled a group of scientists, industrialists, diplomats, and politicians at the Villa Farnesina in Rome. Although the meeting did not turn out well because of disputes about technical issues and differences of opinion, it brought on on the same year the formation of the ‘Club of Rome’. According to their initial declaration, the members of the Club adopted the goal to “advance three core ideas … : a global and a long-term perspective, and the concept of “problematique”, a cluster of intertwined global problems, be they economic, environmental, political or social.” (see ‘History’)
