Fruit Stall by Melinda Bobis

The story is from a first-person point of view of a 40-year-old woman, she is divorced, has no children, and hides her real nationality when running a fruit stall in Australia.

To match her skin tone she dyed her hair and her pale skin color is what she received from her Grandfather.

Her Grandfather also owned a farm where her Grandmother served which was sent at home because she had a “melon” growing under her skirt, in common idiom, she was pregnant.
