The largest map of dark matter

In 1937, astrophysicist Fritz Zwicky noticed that the movement of galaxies in the “Coma Cluster” was somewhat strange. The average speed of the galaxies was too high. It was so high that these galaxies should have dispersed in different directions long ago. Zwicky calculated the mass of all the galaxies, but it was too small for gravity to hold together such fast-moving galaxies.

A similar problem was discovered in other clusters of galaxies and even for stars in our own galaxy. Physicists suggested that in both cases, there exists some additional matter whose mass is significantly greater than that of visible matter, which is the cause of this anomaly. Scientists named this mysterious matter “dark matter,” and the vicinity of the galaxy where this matter is most abundant is called the “dark matter halo.”
