We Can Fix Crime

In my experience, working class people in the United States exist within a strange paradox. They do not like cops, often finding themselves the targets of their unfair and discriminatory harassment. At the same time, crime is a constant worry, whether it’s getting robbed at gunpoint working the morning shift at a gas station or the ticking time bomb of an RV meth lab parked awkwardly in front of their house.

With Republicans generally unwilling to address bread and butter issues like childcare and healthcare, failing to put forward a comprehensive policy platform, and tearing each other apart internally, it’s difficult to understand how they remain competitive. I think a big part of why they still manage to win elections is that while Democrats are seen as foolish and sympathetic towards criminals, Republicans campaign on sending armed officers into dangerous neighborhoods, making arrests, putting people in jail and throwing away the key. People feel insecure, and Republicans offer a sense of security with their tough-on-crime approach.
