How do you ensure diversity in your team?

In a recent interview, I was asked by the final interviewer to give him feedback on the overall experience. I thought I did well and in the final round spoke relatively freely. After a slight hesitation, I said “During the hiring manager interview, I was told that the company focused a lot on diversity. However, I did not see anyone from Native American or African descent. There was no woman in the panel. I only met people from South Asia and White Americans. All of them were from San Francisco! I think the team lacks diversity and hiring me would add to that given my South Asian descent.” The interviewer was taken aback and defensively said that one of the people I met was actually French and not from San Francisco!
