Elite endurance athletes: born or made?
<p>Standing in the heart of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate has been the site of several symbolic events throughout history. On 27th October 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte marched through the gate with his Grand Army, looting its bronze quadriga: a portent of the imperialist conflict that would blight the German capital for much of the 19th and 20th centuries.</p>
<p>On Christmas Day 1989, just weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall, crowds from both sides of the Iron Curtain gathered around the monument as Leonard Bernstein gave his rendition of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, an Ode to Freedom, signalling a renewed commitment to human liberty.</p>
