Dumb Enough to Think She Was Smart Enough to Get Away with Stealing
<p>She wasn’t a teenager. She had teens of her own. Two daughters who went to a private Catholic school. They were a well-respected family in their community.</p>
<p>We worked together at a government-run provincial liquor store in Canada. She was the manager’s favourite employee and always praised for how wonderful she was.</p>
<p>Coworkers envied her designer handbags and trips abroad. We all assumed her husband was doing very well with his construction business. She appeared to have the perfect life.</p>
<p>But I knew something was off with her. She’d once bullied me on the job.</p>

<p>Years later, I still worked for the same liquor corporation and was shocked when I heard that two employees in two different stores were fired for theft.</p>
<p>Because one of my coworkers was my former manager’s niece, I got the inside information. Shocked to hear my former bully was one of the two.</p>
<p>The corporation wanted to keep it quiet.</p>
<p>I couldn’t help but wonder why she’d done it. She’d been working on the job longer than me. Yet she was always passed over for every promotion she applied for. Maybe that disappointment of being overlooked for far too long made her feel they owed her.</p>
