Dirty Athens

On any given day, within the little concrete jungle of Athens, Georgia and the thick, green overgrowth that surrounds it, bike emerge spontaneously from a bank of the North Oconee River, or pop through woods at the Chase Street loop exit. You would be hard pressed, however, to actually see a trail, let alone any signage that might indicate one. In fact, there aren’t really many maps around, and the only thing you can see is a helmet moving through the woods. Under the radar, mountain bike culture has boomed in Athens.

Mountain biking isn’t quite as big as football in Athens, but it has its own subculture amongst the citizens. There are five bike shops in Athens, and they all have consistent customers coming in. The stores provide a place for people to come and learn about the sport and how to tune their own bikes. These shops are a staple in the city, and it’s representative of the bigger culture that they serve. You walk into any of these stores, and each one of them has a different vibe.
