Dispatches from Dance Studies Association Conference 2022

Last weekend, Thursday — Sunday, was the 2022 DSA Conference in Vancouver. I attended last year and in 2017, but, as an “independent scholar” unaffiliated with an academic program, my previous attendance was limited to the single days I was presenting, since the expense was coming out of my own pocket. Still classified as an independent scholar but now working somewhere that supports my attendance (thanks, ODC!), this was my first time really experiencing all that DSA has to offer.

The conference has three main session categories: paper panels, gatherings (discussion panels), and hubs (opportunities for scholars to have closed door sessions with each other and work through ideas collaboratively). I presented my own research about dance aesthetics and how dance is physically framed — proscenium, black box, iPhone — in a paper panel. My colleague, Chloe Zimberg, was part of a gathering on curation.
