Does Nokomis Properly Teach Wabanaki Studies?

<p>Why is teaching native studies so important? These teachings make sure that all students from any background feel seen and represented within the educational system and have a chance to learn of their culture and history. All students deserve the ability to see themselves and their identities reflected in the classrooms and teachings in their education, and without teaching of native studies, some students never get that opportunity.</p> <p>An&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bangordailynews.com/2022/10/10/news/maine-wabanaki-studies-report-xoasq1i29i/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">article</a>&nbsp;was recently released on a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aclumaine.org/sites/default/files/field_documents/2022_wabanaki_report-digital-rev.pdf" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">study</a>&nbsp;regarding the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/bills_120th/billtexts/LD029101-1.asp" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">2001 legislation (LD. 291)</a>&nbsp;requiring the teaching of Wabanaki Studies in Maine schools. In this study it was concluded that schools have not been adequately following this law. Out of all the schools looked at for this study, very few were found to be teaching Wabanaki studies to the proper extent.
