George V. Higgins: Much More Than a Crime Novelist

<p>Higgins was very much a creature of Boston. He graduated from Boston College in 1961 and, six years later, from Boston College Law School. He was proud of all the great writers, athletes and politicians who&rsquo;d worked in Boston. When people from other cities insisted their hospitals were just as good as Boston&rsquo;s, Higgins would say sweetly that there must be some other explanation for the regular arrival at Logan Airport of &ldquo;ailing Arabian potentates, Greek shipping magnates and South American millionaires.&rdquo;</p> <p>On the other hand, Higgins felt that the many college and universities in and around Boston, had inadvertently had a baleful effect on our nation&rsquo;s literature.
